James Lee stands in line for the cutest shoe parade, which took place after a high heels race along Front Street last night in aid of Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust and the Bermuda Red Cross. Mr. Lee had earlier tripped during the men's race. He came second when the contest was restaged.

He may consider himself the hottest thing on high heels — but drag queen Mark Anderson last night ditched his stilettos midway through a charity race along Front Street.

The man better known as Sybil Barrington kicked off his court shoes during the 100 yard fund-raising dash, saving himself from the same fate as fellow male competitor James Lee, who toppled over on gold-studded, patent red leather spikes and gashed his leg.

Mr. Lee could at least console himself with the fact that a female participant in the 'Hard Times, High Heels... going the distance' event had already tumbled to the ground and limped to the finish line in an earlier race.

The unlucky contestants fell over in front of a crowd of hundreds who lined Front Street during Harbour Nights to watch the competition, which was in aid of Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust and Bermuda Red Cross.

The men's race was restaged after the four participants, including Mr. Lee, asked to run again. Mr. Anderson won fair and square the second time, wearing a different pair of size 11 heels and keeping them on throughout his sprint. Mr. Lee came second and Mason Carmal was third.

Mr. Anderson told The Royal Gazette afterwards: "That was a hot mess! The guy, as he fell, one leg was falling towards me. By the time he fell, I more or less jumped out of the way. As I jumped, that's when my shoes came off."

The flamboyant entertainer, son of legendary May 24 runner Neil Virgil, raised more than $500 for the two charities and won himself a month's free gym membership, a bottle of champagne and $150 worth of fuel.

There were more than 60 participants in last night's races, all wearing heels measuring three inches or more and each paying a $30 entry fee, unless they had raised more than $200 in sponsorship.

The women's race was won by Sellah Murrell, with Yasala Simmons in second place and LeAnnette Tucker in third.

Former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith, a regular wearer of killer heels, was recruited to judge the cutest shoe of the night. First prize went to Isodore Lee, in a pair of black and white sandals, with Chaundre Burgess coming second and Aprille DeShield in third place.
