Teachers being educated to stop discrimination in Brazil

Main cause for discrimination against homosexual students in Brazilian schools is the lack of preparation of teachers to deal with the issue, states Agência Brasil. According to Rosiléa Wille, chief-coordinator of Human Rights for MEC, teachers reproduce discriminatory behaviors because they haven’t been educated to handle sexual diversity. She says besides qualifying teachers who are in schools, it’s necessary to modify the professional’s initial educational instruction.

According to MEC, many educators have been participating in LGBT education qualification courses, “but some of them abandon the course because they can’t deal with the subject”, says Claudilene Santos, a psychologist and one of the instructors.

Beto de Jesus, an educator and a representative of ILGA in Latin America, says that ‘teachers often don’t notice that learning is far beyond books, it’s in everyday life. When a teenagers is discriminated, either because he’s gay or because of his skin color, the teacher doesn’t stop teaching his class to discuss the problem because he thinks his syllabus is more important.” Beto believes the qualification program is a big step, but must grow bigger and be strengthened.
