by Hayley Schmalz of Kitchener is a visual artist. She recently read:
I Am Not Myself These Days
by Josh Kilmer-Purcell
(Harper Perennial, 336 pages, $17.50 softcover)
"This book has been a recent favourite of mine. It's a memoir about a young man leading a double life in New York City.
"By day, Josh works as an art director for an advertising firm. By night, he thrives as his alter ego "Aqua," a glittering drag queen. Reading about her exploits, it's obvious how empowered and funny, yet fragile and self-destructive that Aqua is.
"Through her adventures, you can't help but want to read further into her relatable experiences --happiness, confusion, destruction, love, loneliness, expenses, night clubs and disco balls."
Hayley Schmalz will be guest artist during July in the Lower Concourse Gallery at the Kitchener Public Library main branch. Her work will be exhibited July 2 to 26, with an opening reception at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8. All welcome.
